Virginia Lottery: Cash 5, Mega Millions and Lotto South

On September 20 the Virginia Lottery celebrated its 15th anniversary. It was 15 years ago that the Virginia Lottery sold its first ticket, which was the $1 scratch ticket, "Match 3." A lot has happened since then. We have grown from offering just that one game to a wide variety of scratch and on-line games. We have sold more than $14.3 billion in Virginia Lottery games. Most importantly, we have also raised more than $4.9 billion dollars for the Commonwealth of Virginia, awarded more than $7.7 billion in prizes to our players and paid out more than $780 million in retailer compensation.

We are especially proud of the most recent fiscal year, in which we set many records. Our sales were a record $1.262 billion. Our profits, which by constitutional mandate go to public education (K-12) in Virginia, were a record-breaking $408.1 million. Retailer compensation was a record $70.7 million. We accomplished all this while keeping our administrative expense rate to the lowest ever: just 5.4%. In other words, we kept the cost of operating the Lottery down to only about five cents on the dollar.

We feel a lot of pride here at the Virginia Lottery - pride in our mission to raise funds for Virginia's public schools (K-12) and pride in our record-setting performance. We are proud of our great retailers and proud of the fun games that we create. Most of all, we are proud of the reputation for integrity the Virginia Lottery has earned over 16 years.
