South Dakota Lottery: Dakota Cash, Hot Lotto and Powerball

The South Dakota Lottery's instant, lotto and video lottery games have generated over $1 billion for state projects and programs (through Fiscal Year 2003).

Scratch games have raised nearly $55 million for the state since their introduction 16 years ago. Those proceeds have been directed to the state's General Fund, which finances programs like health, human and social service projects, and K-12, university and technical school education.

The state's Video Lottery games, which started in 1989, have generated over $990 million for the state. For the first six years, the state's share of video lottery was deposited into the state's general fund. Since 1995, video lottery proceeds have been dedicated to the Property Tax Reduction Fund, to help lower taxes on all property classified as agricultural and single family/owner-occupied.

Lotto games, introduced in 1990, have raised nearly $43 million for state projects, mostly through the Capital Construction Fund. Currently this fund finances water development projects, ethanol production incentives and state highway projects.

For Dakota Cash, select 5 balls from 35. There are 4 prize levels:

1. 5 balls
2. 4 balls
3. 3 balls
4. 2 balls

For multi-state Hot Lotto, select 5 numbers from 39 and another number (the Hot Ball) from a separate pool of 19. All 6 numbers are required to win first prize. There are 9 levels of prizes:

1. 5 main balls + hot ball
2. 5 main balls
3. 4 main balls + hot ball
4. 4 main balls
5. 3 main balls + hot ball
6. 3 main balls
7. 2 main balls + hot ball
8. 1 main ball + hot ball
9. hot ball only

For multi-state Powerball, select 5 numbers from 53 and another number (the Powerball) from a separate pool of 42. All 6 numbers are required to win first prize. There are 9 levels of prizes:

1. 5 main balls + powerball
2. 5 main balls
3. 4 main balls + powerball
4. 4 main balls
5. 3 main balls + powerball
6. 3 main balls
7. 2 main balls + powerball
8. 1 main ball + powerball
9. power ball only
