Oregon Lottery: Megabucks and Powerball

What do Oregon's public schools, businesses, workforce, state parks and salmon all have in common? They all receive Lottery profits to help them prepare for the future!

Prior to the current biennium (2003-05), all Lottery profits went to helping fund Oregon's K-12 schools, and to strengthening Oregon's economy. Constitutional amendments approved by Oregon voters in 1984 and 1995 earmarked Lottery profits for economic development and public education. In November 1998, 65% of Oregon voters approved another Constitutional amendment that added parks and salmon restoration to that list of allowable uses of Lottery proceeds.

Since the Lottery began in 1985, over $3.4 billion in Lottery profits has gone to public education and economic development programs throughout Oregon. During that same time, players have won over $8.5 billion in prizes, and almost $2 billion has been paid to Oregon businesses for services and supplies needed to operate the Lottery.

The Oregon Constitution and legislative statutes govern how and where Oregon Lottery dollars are distributed, and defines what types of programs can receive Lottery funds. It also requires that the Lottery be funded entirely by its sales; no tax dollars or other public funds are used to operate the Oregon Lottery.

For tri-state Megabucks, select 6 numbers from 42. 6 main numbers are drawn and another number (the Bonus Number) from the remaining 36. All 6 numbers are required to win first prize. There are 8 levels of prizes:

1. 6 main balls
2. 5 main balls + bonus ball
3. 5 main balls
4. 4 main balls + bonus ball
5. 4 main balls
6. 3 main balls + bonus ball
7. 2 main balls + bonus ball
8. 3 main balls

For multi-state Powerball, select 5 numbers from 53 and another number (the Powerball) from a separate pool of 42. All 6 numbers are required to win first prize. There are 9 levels of prizes:

1. 5 main balls + powerball
2. 5 main balls
3. 4 main balls + powerball
4. 4 main balls
5. 3 main balls + powerball
6. 3 main balls
7. 2 main balls + powerball
8. 1 main ball + powerball
9. power ball only
