New Zealand Lottery: NZ Lotto

The purpose of the New Zealand Lottery commission is to provide safe gaming that allows New Zealanders to play and win and contribute money back to New Zealand communities.

Earnings are passed on to the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board and flow on to directly benefit the community. Funding from the Lottery Grants Board for vital community projects and the activities of major statutory bodies relies on the profits that come from our games. Since its creation, NZLC has contributed more than $1.8 billion to the Lottery Grants Board. These are the stories of some of the organisations that have benefited from lottery funding.

Every year Sport & Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) receives significant lottery funding to help keep New Zealand active. SPARC has been allocated $28.2 million in funding for the 2003/2004 period, that’s at least 20% of NZLC transfers to the Lottery Grants Board.

Creative New Zealand (CNZ) is a major beneficiary of lottery grants and has been allocated $18.6 million in funding for the 2003/2004 period, that’s 15% of NZLC transfers to the Lottery Grants Board.

The New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) is a major beneficiary of lottery grants and has been allocated $8 million in funding for the 2003/2004 period. It receives at least 6.5% of NZLC transfers to the Lottery Grants Board.

For more than 30 years Barnardos has worked within the community to help New Zealand children receive the care, education, and support they need in order to grow and reach their potential. Barnardos has received more than $3 million in lottery money to date.

Kidney Kids was founded in 1990 by Elaine Simons whose two daughters both have kidney failure. Elaine discovered there was little support available for young kidney patients and their families so she decided to do something about it – Kidney Kids is the result. Since 1993 Kidney Kids has received more than $92,000 of lottery grants funding and has been allocated $14,250 in funding for the 2003/2004 period.

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust recognises, protects and promotes New Zealand’s historic and cultural heritage. Over the past two financial years – 2002/03 and 2003/04 - the Historic Places Trust has received $240,000 in Lottery Grants Funding.

For the NZ Lotto, you select 6 balls from 46 plus, optionally, a Power Ball from 1 to 8. 6 balls are drawn plus 1 Bonus Ball from the remaining 40. Match the 6 main balls to win first prize or a combination of main balls and bonus ball to win minor prizes. The NZ Lotto has 6 prize levels.If you win a prize and have also selected the winning Power Ball, the Powerball jackpot is added to your winnings.
