JACKPOT CLIMBS TO ESTIMATED $120 MILLION: Mega Millions excitement is growing along with the jackpot and NetLotto players definitely want a piece of the action. Almost 720,000 tickets from coast to coast were winners in the Friday, April 08, 2005 drawing. That includes 19 tickets that each won $175,000 and 83 tickets that each won $5,000. In fact, Mega Millions players won a total of $7,257,061 in Friday’s drawing. However, no ticket matched all six numbers to win the $102 million jackpot. That means the jackpot for the Tuesday, April 12, 2005 Mega Millions drawing grows to an estimated $120 million. Friday’s winning numbers were 05-13-17-33-35 and the Mega Ball number 35.
... In May of 2000, Mega Millions made worldwide headlines when it offered the largest jackpot - $363 million - in North American history. Since May 3, 2002, when the current number matrix was started, the 6 most frequently drawn numbers were 10, 32, 52, 49, 31 and 39 and the 6 least frequently drawn numbers were 23, 25, 33, 9, 11 and 43.

STRIKE RATE: When you use NetLotto to check your generated entries against past results, a strike rate is calculated and shown progressively at the bottom of the screen. This shows what percentage of entries would have won a prize. Strike rates of more than 50% are common. That is, using NetLotto to generate your numbers, you would have won a prize more than half the time. Strike rates of up to 80% have been known to occur on some games. This takes into account multiple winnings on the one entry.
A BIT OF HISTORY - CASANOVA CREATES THE FIRST NATIONAL LOTTERY: In the middle 18th century, a notable event occurred in France. Because of the potential for fixing the results in privately operated lotteries, Giacomo Girolamo Casanova (1725 – 1798) persuaded Louis XV of France to found the first state-owned monopoly lottery, the Loterie Royale of the Military School, which became the forerunner of the Loterie Nationale. All other lotteries in France were outlawed. The lottery was a Keno style game, where players could select 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 numbers between 1 and 90. (Incidentally, Casanova owned an interest in the new lottery and became wealthy as a result, but sold his interest shortly afterwards and lost the proceeds through unwise investments; sounds just like some modern lottery winners, doesn’t it?)
RAY CHARLES ADVERTISES LOTTERY: The Arizona Lottery is paying tribute to legendary musician Ray Charles by airing for the first time in Arizona television advertisements recorded by the artist. The campaign, Celebrating the Work of Mr. Ray Charles, aired for the first time in Phoenix during the Sunday, Feb. 27, Barbara Walters pre-Oscar show and the post news coverage.
The original music on the advertisements titled, “It’s America ’s Game,” showcases Charles’ eclectic talent recorded in a variety of musical styles. “It’s America’s Game” was written, arranged and conducted by Victor Vanacore, a 2005 Grammy™ recipient for his work on Ray Charles’ “Genius Loves Company” duet album.

ANOTHER TEXAN MULTI-MILLIONAIRE: Austin, March 11) - News has a way of traveling fast in Rowlett, but not so accurately. When Dennis Cain spoke with a friend on the phone Wednesday afternoon, the friend told him that a winning Mega Millions™ ticket for the Tuesday night drawing was sold at a Rowlett store on Dalrock Road. The drawing was worth $112 million. "I figured my ticket wasn't the one because I bought mine at Dalrock Grocery on Chiesa," Cain said. "I went to work and everyone was talking about it, but no one could decide where exactly the store was located."
Cain got a Mega Millions drawing results' printout at another retail location and checked his ticket at home later in the evening - just to be sure.
"I had to look at it six different ways," he said. "You always want to win, but you don't really ever think, 'it's going to be me.'"
As Cain took the cash option, he received a check made out for $68,208,778!

THIS WEEK'S TIP: Many foreign lotteries allow you to play over the Internet. Although you will collect if you win, you must check the tax implications first. In some cases, you could end up paying both foreign and domestic taxes on your winnings. More on this in a later issue. Incidentally, the lottery with the best odds is New Mexico Roadrunner and the one with the worst odds is Euromillions.
