Arizona Lottery: Arizona The Pick, Powerball and Fantasy 5

Through a public initiative in November 1980, Arizona became the first state west of the Mississippi to have a legal, state-administered lottery. The approval margin was slim – 51 to 49 percent. But, according to the “originals,” the excitement in the months to follow made it seem like the vote had been a landslide victory.

The Arizona Lottery opened its doors July 1, 1981, and the first Scratchers ticket, Scratch It Rich, with a $10,000 top prize, went on sale over the July 4th weekend. The 21.4 million tickets sold out in 10 days!

Scratchers remained the Arizona Lottery’s only product line for several years. To give players other options, in 1984, we introduced our first online jackpot game, The Pick, which was an immediate success. Sales for the first year topped $86.4 million. Subsequent additions included: 1991-Fantasy 5; 1994-Powerball; 1998-Pick 3.

And, naturally, we are very proud of the fact that over the past two decades, we have raised over $1.7 billion for statewide projects and programs.

The Pick, Fantasy 5 and Powerball

For Arizona The Pick, you select 6 numbers from 41. 7 numbers are drawn, comprising 6 main numbers and 1 Bonus Ball. All 6 numbers are required to win first prize and combinations of some main numbers plus the bonus ball are required to win a minor prize. There are 5 levels of prizes:

1. 6 main balls
2. 5 main balls + bonus ball
3. 5 main balls
4. 4 main balls
5. 3 main balls

For Arizona Fantasy 5, you select 5 numbers from 35. There are 3 levels of prizes:

1. 5 balls
2. 4 balls
3. 3 balls

For multi-state Powerball, select 5 numbers from 53 and another number (the Powerball) from a separate pool of 42. All 6 numbers are required to win first prize. There are 9 levels of prizes:

1. 5 main balls + powerball
2. 5 main balls
3. 4 main balls + powerball
4. 4 main balls
5. 3 main balls + powerball
6. 3 main balls
7. 2 main balls + powerball
8. 1 main ball + powerball
9. power ball only
